И, несмотря на прошедшие годы, их мысли и поведение мало чем отличаются от современной молодежи.
The protagonists of the film are children of different ages, primary school students. As one of them says, children are little adults, they also work – at school. In the film, it turns out that the young characters are witty, intelligent, and mature. In the process of socialization, children quickly discover the mechanisms ruling the group, they also notice the contradictions between what is thought and what is said in the adult world. Above all, they complain that school does not allow them to develop their imagination and think independently.
Tomasz Zygadło, director and screenwriter of documentaries ("Brudnopis") and feature films ("Rebus", "Odwet", "Ćma"), belonged to the so-called generation of change. Together with Krzysztof Kieślowski and Marcel Łoziński, they renewed the formula of documentaries. The institutions they chose, such as schools, offices, factories and hospitals, were supposed to show on a micro scale the mechanisms present in the society. "Szkoła podstawowa" was the debut of Zygadło. He also performed as an actor in the films of his friends, including the role of a theater director in Agnieszka Holland's "Aktorzy prowincjonalni" and the role of a film director in Robert Gliński's "Łabędzi śpiew".
The film won the Golden Dragon, the main prize in the international competition, and the Bronze Hobby-Horse, the third prize in the Polish competition, at the Krakow Film Festival (1971). After many years, the director returned to his protagonists, once seven-year-olds, in the film titled "Szkoła podstawowa, czyli wykształciuchy" (2006).
Хоть и называется "Начальная школа", в фильме детишки всех возрастов.
