Chairman Mao Zedong, leader of Communist China has decreed that sparrows are eating his crops and should be hunted and killed to save the nation.
A young boy, Li, lives in a rural village in China. His grandmother is sick and starving. While day dreaming, he sees a sparrow land in a distant tree. He then hears a loud BANG and finds a young girl clanking pots and pans and wearing an over sized military uniform. She's hunting the village's last sparrow. If Li agrees to help her she'll give him a reward that could save his grandma's life. But this sparrow's tricky and they'll have to get through the haunted Buddhist temple first...
China's "Great Leap Forward" was a period of hope and social change. Because of the Communist Party's disastrous reforms it ended in the world's largest famine. It is estimated that over 30 million people starved to death. We dedicate this film in their honor.
