Certainly the stuff of melodrama, and of course the film was clearly intended as an effort to promote the Third Reich concept of the self-sacrificing mother, and as such garnered the highest praise from Goebbels. But in spite of the cause, this is nevertheless a very engaging, gentle film in its own right, and as I said elsewhere, there isn't any big difference to similar roles that for instance Henny Porten played several times. It works very well as a family story and also has some realistic detail about people in Vienna who were not from the upper classes.

"Mutterliebe" was remade in 1954 as "Das Licht der Liebe/Wenn du noch eine Mutter hast", directed by Robert A. Stemmle, and with Paula Wessely in the main role.
