“Arrivederci” – this is a movie about abandoned children in deep waters

One of nine children from the Republic of Moldova (RM) is brought up without one or both parents, at present being registered 100 thousand abandoned children.

Most of the parents, who abandon their children, are gone abroad to find a better job and a way to overcome the poverty. Thus, the official statistics shows that almost 300 to 600 thousand Moldavians are working abroad, and the nonofficial statistics states that the number of Moldavians who work abroad is one million out of those 3,6 millions citizens of RM. Over 50% of the children from RM live in poverty, 10 times more then in other European South-Eastern countries. The existence minimum estimated for one child is 2,28 dollars per day. According to a report published by UNICEF almost 60% of the children live under this level.
When speaking about the parents who leave their children and go abroad to work, usually, we speak about the economical aspects of this phenomenon, and we rarely mention the children in deep waters, when they are left by their parents in charge of their grandparents, neighbors, relatives or even alone. The psychologists affirm that the migration of parents is the same for their children as the loss at divorce or decease.
Also in the RM one of two marriages ends up in a divorce. The result of these divorces is those 6 thousand minor children who grow up without one of the parents.
The stage producer from RM, Valeriu Jereghi, succeeded in reflecting, in his new movie “Arrivederci”, the drama of two children abandoned by their mother, who left the country to work abroad, and by their father who previously left the family. The children, aged 5 and respectively 7, live alone and suffer from poverty, hang together and have a dream to grow up and go to Italy, where their mother is. Broken down by the poverty, she left them alone because she knew she had taught them how to fight the life and survive, how to work and to live on, and because she knew that people living nearby will give them a hand. But she couldn’t imagine that no money in the world deserves the tragedy inside the children’s souls and their grief for their mother. She thought that she could give them a better life only if she had enough money. At the same time, the movie touches another drama of the people from RM – the temporary abandon of the husbands by their wives, who form other families abroad.
The movie is a compilation of real stories that form just a small part of the tragedies of the citizens who live in RM as a result of a massive emigration. Similar dramas happen in other European countries that confront the emigration. Thus, the movie “Arrivederci” will be easier to understand by many people who have the same question as the Moldavians have – “What happened with our souls? Why we lost each other so much? Why can’t we give more love and warmth to our children?”
The tragedy of the abandoned children is not over when their parents return. Over the years, they will form the same type of family, because they keep in their mind the model of the family they lived in. At the same time, the tragedy of the parents who are now abroad or who destroyed their marriages, is just waiting to be suffered as by them and by their children, so by their descendents. There is just one hope for those who have seen the movie “Arrivederci” – Ionel will get over the difficulties and will become a good citizen of this country, a good master of this land, because he had understood the importance of the parents’ house and that the dreams about the “easy” money gained abroad are just castles in the air . We have to pay for everything in this life…
